TYLER, TX – Bishop Joseph E. Strickland is pleased to announce that he has appointed Elizabeth Slaten as the Director of Communications for the St. Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization in the Diocese of Tyler.

Elizabeth, who will assume her new role on May 1, has served as the Managing Editor for the Catholic East Texas magazine since 2021. As the Director of Communications, Elizabeth will continue to manage the Catholic East Texas while building and developing communications for the St. Philip Institute.

“Elizabeth has done an outstanding job with the Catholic East Texas since she joined us in January 2021. She is a bright young woman and a true disciple of Jesus Christ, and this combination has allowed her to serve the Institute and diocese in an exemplary manner,” Bishop Strickland said. “I look forward to all that Elizabeth will accomplish in communications as she continues to collaborate with the great team at the St. Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization.”

Originally from Nacogdoches, Elizabeth came to the St. Philip Institute from St. Mary’s Catholic Church and School in Longview where she served as the Director of Evangelization and Catechesis for the parish. She holds a master’s degree in theology from the Augustine Institute.

Bishop Strickland founded the St. Philip Institute to help carry out the teaching mission of the Church in the Diocese of Tyler and serve the parishes and people of the diocese by providing materials, expertise and support in the proclamation of the Gospel.
