Catechist Certification

Franciscan at Home Catechist Certification

“Any person who takes up this great challenge to teach the faith should be given the opportunity to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of Catholicism, and even to specialize in areas of theology.”

—Bishop Joseph Strickland, Constitution on Teaching (53)

The St. Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization of the Diocese of Tyler is partnering with the Franciscan University of Steubenville Catechetical Institute to provide training and certification to the catechists and teachers in the schools and parishes of East Texas. This program is available in English and offers several tracks depending on your goals. In 2020, a Spanish track will be available.* In his Constitution on Teaching the Catholic Faith, His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop Joseph Strickland declared the diocese to be a “teaching diocese.” This partnership unites the diocese with many other dioceses in the United States who are a part of this program to provide catechists with a comprehensive understanding of Catholic teaching. Catechists will be confident that they are prepared to teach the goodness, truth, and beauty of the whole Catholic faith. As Bishop Strickland said, “Any person who takes up this great challenge to teach the faith should be given the opportunity to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of Catholicism, and even to specialize in areas of theology” (53).

If you have any questions about the program, please see these Frequently Asked Questions. Or you can contact the St. Philip Institute at info@StPhilipInstitute.org or call the offices at (903) 630-5055.

*Until the Spanish track is available, please contact the St. Philip Institute if you are bilingual and interested in helping provide courses in Spanish.
