Teaching the Catholic Faith

Children's Faith Formation

"This catechesis is didactic in character, but is directed towards the giving of witness in the faith. It is an initial catechesis but not a fragmentary one, since it will have to reveal, although in an elementary way, all the principal mysteries of faith and their effects on the child's moral and religious life."

— Pope St. John Paul II, Catechesi Tradendae (37)

The St. Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization seeks to support all engaged in the faith formation of children. Children's catechesis is vital for their growth as Catholics and in their encounter with Jesus Christ, the one true God. When challenged properly, children come to a deep knowledge of their Catholic faith and a profound encounter with Christ.

To support the faith formation of children and to bring young Catholics  to a deep knowledge of their faith and a profound encounter with Christ, the St. Philip Institute recommends Faith and Life catechetical series for grades one through eight by Ignatius Press, which Bishop Joseph Strickland has mandated for faith formation in the Diocese of Tyler. Coupled with the rich formation of catechists themselves, this material will be a source of true renewal in catechesis in the Diocese of Tyler.

For the fall of 2019, Mikki Sciba of the St. Philip Institute is holding a series of lunchtime webinars to provide help to and share ideas with CCD teachers in the diocese. See our Events page for more information.
