Lesson 11: “Tend the Flock of God”

The priest is entrusted with the care of souls and overseeing the administration of a parish or a particular work of the diocese under the direction of the bishop. His duty to govern, along with his duty to teach and sanctify, and animated especially by his duty to offer worship, signifies his participation in the “kingly office of Christ.” The priest is therefore ordained to shepherd responsibly and with a servant’s heart, after the image of Christ the Good Shepherd.

Discussion Questions:

1. Do you ever wonder what a priest does besides say Mass and pray? Who pays the bills? Who makes sure maintenance is done on the parish?

2. Have you ever been in a situation where you didn’t get to make decisions, and were frustrated by the decision? Do you think priests do the same thing?

3. Have you ever thought about running a business where you are totally dependent on people’s generosity? Do you know what a nonprofit is? When was the last time you gave up something so your family could purchase something or go on a vacation?

4. Do you ever consider that priests are responsible for your souls? Or do you think: he doesn’t have time for me? Have you ever asked a priest for help?

“Bestow upon me, O Lord my God, understanding to know thee, diligence to seek thee, wisdom to find thee, and a faithfulness that may finally embrace thee.” -St. Thomas Aquinas
