This original painting was created to accompany the Pieta by William Bouguereau as an altar piece. In this painting there are references to the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Mary is seated with her hands in a position of prayer contemplating her son. Behind her stands a rose bush with twelve fiery roses. This is a reference to the burning bush, which is seen as a prefigurement of Mary. Jesus lays flat wrapped in swaddling clothes: a reference to His humble birth and the burial clothes he would later be wrapped in. The cave of the nativity and a three tiered yellow tree lie in the background. The cave is a reminder of Christ’s birth but also the tomb he would be buried in. The autumn tree is symbolic of the resurrection. It can be seen as a representation rebirth that comes with the change of the seasons. This painting was created for the chapel, Redemptoris Mater, which resides on the John Paul the Great Campus Ministry Center near the University of Tyler.
