Words from the Artist

Robert Puschautz
Stabat Mater Art Fellow

This is a master copy of the Pieta originally painted in 1875 by the French artist William Bouguereau. The copy was commissioned for the chapel Redemptoris Mater which resides on the John Paul the Great Campus Ministry Center near the University of Tyler. It was placed adjacent to the altar. In the painting Mary is depicted as cradling the body of her son, Jesus Christ. Her tear-filled eyes meet the gaze of the viewer. This challenges those present to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus Christ offered that first Good Friday and continues to offer every mass. Mary is seated on a stone slab, reminiscent of the altar. I simplified the background of the original painting to show the beam of the cross and purple altar clothes swaying in the wind in order to draw attention to its liturgical setting.
